Kung Fu Theater: Eagle vs. Silverfox (1982) Review

Eagle vs. Silver Fox is an independent film in the Kung Fu genre, as with many of these movies it was very difficult to find any information about the actors. Unless it is a Shaw Brothers offering, it can be near impossible to come up with any viable and accurate information. There was some information available on some of the actors, and while this movie is not the best Kung Fu flick I have seen it was fun enough to watch.
Jang Lee plays Silver Fox, a Manchurian warlord who is trying to stop messages from being sent south. An opening fight between Jang Lee and a messenger is one of the best in the film and displays and incredible sequence of legwork by Jang Lee. He then disappears for the majority of the film and the story focuses on the son of one of the messengers who survives an attack. Mario Chan is credited as being in this movie, but I was unclear which character he played.
The son of the messenger is rescued by an old monk who trains him in a rare and powerful form of kung fu, shortly before the monk dies. But, before showing his rescue, director Godfrey Ho chooses to jump ahead to a point where the messenger’s son is a “wanderer” who walks into a teahouse to engage in your confrontation with a number of Silver Fox’s thugs.
After beating the crap out of the lesser skills thugs, he is joined by Yu Ling, a woman who decides to follow him for reasons she initially keeps to herself. As the pair journeys towards Silver Fox’s mansion, they come across another monk who turns out to be a friend of his former master. The three then team up to finish off Silver Fox’s men and eventually the warlord himself.
The kung fu action is mostly solid and the messenger’s son (Mario Chan?) does a decent job. Although not used frequently, Hwang Jang Lee does get in some terrific kicks, including a midair triple kick to the chest. As a character though, Jang Lee is a disappointing villain as Silver Fox was somewhat not believable. In most of these movies you see the villain running around wrecking havoc most of the time, but Silver Fox seemed okay with his thugs doing all the fighting for him until the end.
I am a bit more forgiving than some people who review these movies, I think over the movie was good. I would not say it is one of the best of all time or anything like that, but definitely enjoyable to watch. There were some moments that left you scratching your head, and very interesting choices with the dubbing. Also, they seemed to jump to and from parts of the story that were not contiguous.
