Motorola Droid X Preview

The next phone that is up to be released amidst much hype, Motorola has unveiled their latest techno bauble, the Droid X. It’s everything the old Droid was (except a tactile keyboard), and more.  Of course in the Smartphone business, you have to keep releasing devices to stay relevant.  The Droid X has the capability to muffle out the hoopla generated by the iPhone 4, it seems every phone is going to have its time in the spotlight.

Notable improvements on the Droid X include a much larger screen, the Android 2.1 operating system with a blur skin, a decent 8 megapixel camera from all accounts of use so far.  The ability to capture 720p video just like the iPhone 4 is included as well. It’s less bulky, without a slide-out keyboard like its predecessor.  It’s going to be a contender for both the iPhone 4 and, more equally, the HTC Evo, it certainly outstrips previous droids in terms of performance and looks.

Some things it lacks, though, are a front-facing camera and 4G support (like the Evo), but it’s easily the best phone available on Verizon, so if you live somewhere that Sprint and AT&T don’t cover as well as they should, this is probably your best bet in terms of smart phones.  In terms of the keyboard Swype comes preloaded on the phone, and from using it on my HTC HD2 it has made me comfortable leaving a hardware keyboard behind.  On top of that the Droid X’s keyboard is going to be multitouch capable, so two letters at a time will be able to be typed without issue for even faster texting.

The real challenge to the iPhone is the Verizon network, which is better than AT&T’s in many cities.  The ability to “tether,” or connect the device to your computer to use it as a high-speed connection for your laptop is another out of the box feature of the Smartphone. The new Droid X goes one better by allowing users to connect up to five devices, basically turning the phone into a mobile hot spot. (Verizon does charge an extra fee for this.)
