Covert Affairs Recap 1.02 – Walter’s Walk
Annie wakes up after having dreams about her ordeal in the subway station, she still wonders if she saw the man who abandoned her years ago. She reports to work, and finds out that her department is moving to a new state of the art office. Joan approaches Annie and tells her she has to debrief the walk-ins which are people who show up at the CIA and report that they have information. It is one of those jobs at every place of employment that you would not want to do, so the new person always gets stuck with it.
After several crazy fools tell their off the wall stories, a woman walks in and says her son decoded a secret message from a numbers station that is virtually unbreakable. Annie takes a closer look and finds out that the woman’s son Walter is a young kid who is probably about 13 years old, but he is smart enough to be in college already.
A new CIA operative gets transferred to the DPD named Jay Wilcox (Mohinder from heroes), there seems to be a bit of history with him and others in the department which does not seem positive. Annie goes to talk to Auggie about the numbers station and she meets Jay, and we find out that his father was a big wig in the CIA at one point. Auggie starts to listen to the numbers station transmissions, and discovers that there are a series of numbers being broadcast that are no random.
Annie gets a call from the mother who thinks they are being followed, and hopes Annie can help. Just as the mother hangs up Auggie calls Annie hoping to get in contact with the son because he believes they may have uncovered a secret spy transmission. The mother and child cannot be found, and the CIA is trying to find them. In the meantime they discover that the transmissions are more than likely from the IRA. They are meant for an IRA operative who was recently released from prison and is now living in the United States.
They are pairing Annie up with a Mi-6 agent to wait at the mothers place to see if she shows up, she gets her protocol and goes to the market to meet him. They go through the script and verify that both of them are operatives, they then get in Annie’s car and head off to look for the mother and son. They break into the house and notice that the mom and son have not been back to their apartment, and they start to look around for any clues that may help find them.
As they look around Elliot (The MI-6 agent) goes to survey the apartment, while he is gone the door bell rings and Annie makes a rookie mistake and looks through the peephole. As she does someone barges in and starts beating her up, she holds her own for a bit, but the perpetrator is about to knock her out with a blunt object. Well Elliot steps out of the kitchen and shoots the invader in the head just before he hits her, which of course kills the invader.
The grab some of the tapes from Walter’s room, but the police are on their way because someone reported the gun shot being fired. Annie and Elliot start to leave the building, and try to slip by the cops but they are stopped for questioning before they leave. The CIA had an agent in place impersonating a detective who gets them clear, they head back to drop off the evidence and call it a night.
Arthur and Joan have dinner together to work on their marriage problems, things seem to be on the way to getting patched up between them which is a drastic change over last episode. Annie struggling with her family relationships because they do not know she works for the CIA, and of course she cannot tell them. Her sister was hoping that Annie would agree to take custody of her kids should something happen to her, but Annie decides she cannot do it after talking to Auggie about how to handle the situation. Her sister is not very happy and feels that Annie is being selfish, and only thinking of herself.
Annie is in the gym taking out her frustrations on the heavy back, she is tired of getting her ass kicked in close quarters combat. Auggie shows her a few techniques beyond her training at the farm, and he also tries to help her deal with the situation with her sister. The invader that was killed by Elliot was a member of the IRA, and they discover the recently released IRA operative Cahill is on his way to D.C. to clean up the mess.
Annie wants to follow any leads on Helen and Walter to try and find them, but Joan is not convinced they have any more to offer the case.
Jay Wilcox suggests to Joan that she let Annie follow that lead, and Joan tells her not to get caught. Then Joan tells Jay that he will learn to not question her in front of her agents, as those are her decisions. The CIA meets Cahill at the airport and they take him into custody, for some reason the Cahill angle seems like a smoke screen to me.
Annie finds a few clues about Helen and Walter’s whereabouts, and takes a chance by calling a hotel and asking about the mother and son that just checked in. She gets confirmation that a mother and son did check in, and requested to not take any calls which confirms to Annie where they are.
Joan interrogates Cahill, who says that he is in town to simply meet old friends and that he left his old life behind. Annie shows up at the hotel where Helen and Walter are staying to ask Walter if he will give her the tapes he recorded. Walter is reluctant to help, but Annie convinces him to give her his tapes which she then uploads to Auggie through her cell phone. Annie finds out from Helen that they went to the British Embassy before contacting the CIA, and Elliot told Annie that he had not file on them.
Annie pieces together a few other bits of information about Elliot, and realizes that he is a double agent. She then finds a hidden GPS tracker on her phone, and tells Auggie that Elliot is in fact a double agent. Just as she discovers this Elliot and a crew of hit men pull up to the hotel. Annie sets up a trap in the room and takes out the two hit men as the three of them escape out of the back.
Elliot gets into a fight with Annie, and she beats him up, badly (I guess the training from Auggie pays off). They discover that Elliot was helping to setup a car bomb outside of the British Embassy, and that Cahill had nothing to do with it. Joan has to apologize to Cahill for arresting and holding him. Arthur Campbell meets with Jay Wilcox, and tells him to continue to get close to Annie Walker to see what she knows about Ben Mercer.
Annie’s sister apologizes to her for getting upset at her, and she finds out that Annie actually had a change of heart and did sign the Will after all. Annie surprisingly got advice from Elliot while he was in the back of the police car, and he was honest with her about being a spy with a family. The second episode was solid, and this show seems like it is going to keep getting better. I really do not see how a spy show can fail unless you have the worst writers in the world, we will see how Annie balances hiding her CIA job from her family and meeting the demands of the agency.
