Covert Affairs Recap 1.07 – Communication Breakdown

Annie is having breakfast with her sister as she is setting up shots for a catering business she is attempting to start as a result of her husband being unemployed.  We then see Auggie with a young woman after they spent the night together, apparently the cable, phones, and internet across the entire city are out.  Auggie is about to “get some”, but he notices all those services being out and he finds it odd and decides to go to work leaving the young lady at his place.

When he gets to the office Joan Campbell tells him that all of those services were down for about 15 minutes, and Auggie tells her a big time Data Security Conference is in town and a hacker is trying to make a name for them.  Joan is sending Auggie in undercover, and they brief the group on what they found out about the attack.  After analyzing the hacker code they trace it back to a hacker named Natasha, who just happens to be Auggie’s ex-girlfriend.

They continue to brief the mission, and as they break down things about Natasha Auggie is somewhat conflicted about the situation.  Joan tells Auggie that he needs to re-unite with Natasha and offer her up to $2 million dollars for the technology she used for the hack.  Auggie knows she hates the government and might scoff against that offer because she hates the government.  Annie and Auggie head to the conference where Auggie briefs her on geek attire, and he hears Natasha asking a question to the speaker at the conference.

Auggie catches up with her afterward and when she sees him, she slaps the taste out of his mouth.  They go into a brief discussion of their history, and she’s about to walk away when he tells her he is blind and that he wants the code she wrote.  They head outside where they talk a bit more and Annie offers her the $2 million she tells Auggie he knows better than that, and that she is going to release the code on the city to cause havoc.  He tries to talk her out of it and he then reveals to her that he works for the CIA and always has, that is why he left her waiting for him when they were together.  Of course she is not happy to hear this news and walks off in disbelief.

Annie and Auggie head back to base as they discuss more about the history of him and Natasha’s relationship, they were together for a little over a year and things got kind of serious.  When they get back they tell Joan Campbell that Natasha plans on releasing the hack at the conference, so Joan decides to send Auggie back in the next day and she gives him a pep talk to get him out of the dumps.  Annie’s sister posts the pictures she took on the internet, and the CIA asks her to take them down for security purposes.  Annie talks to her sister and makes up some bogus excuse to have them taken down, and she is upset but removes the photos.

As Annie goes to pick Auggie up the next day in order to head to meet Natasha, he gets a call from Liza Hearn who was the woman in his apartment earlier.  She is also the news reporter who has a source inside the FBI leaking her information, and Annie believes Auggie is the leak.  He tells her that he is running an off the books operation on her to try and find the source of the leak and their bosses do not know anything about it.  They head to meet Natasha, Jai Wilcox and Annie keep watch as Auggie tries to talk her out of going through with releasing the hack.  They notice FBI agents closing in on Auggie and Natasha and he tells her if she takes the deal the FBI won’t be able to touch her, just as he says that a truck tries to run them over and he pulls her out of the way just in time.

When the dust settles and everyone comes over to see if they are okay, Auggie notices that Natasha is gone and they are unable to locate her.  When they get back to base they find out that the Russian MOB were the people trying to kill her, Joan decides it’s FBI jurisdiction and sends the files over to them.  Auggie is upset that they are giving up on the operation, he heads home and finds Natasha waiting on him when he gets there.  She tells him that she did some work for the Russian Mob, and now they think they own a piece of everything she creates.

Auggie fails to show up for work the next day and does not follow protocol by calling in, Annie and Jai get suspicious and they head to his apartment to find all of his stuff there.  Auggie and Natasha have gotten on a train to Montreal, and at his apartment Annie finds a few clues that lead them to the train they are on (probably left on purpose).  Auggie is on the train attempting to steal a card he needs to do a data transfer, and the find a Canadian business man who they run a con on to get his wallet.  In the meantime Joan Campbell tells the FBI the location of the train, but she tells Annie and Jai that the CIA needs to make it to them before the FBI does.

The FBI stops the train, but Auggie and Natasha are not on it.  Somehow they managed to get on another train going the other way as they pass the puzzled FBI agents.  Auggie and Natasha stole the immigration cards of the two passengers they conned, and start to change the pictures and information associated with the cards.  Auggie and Natasha start talking and end up “re-kindling” the feelings they previously had for each other, and seem like they have free passage on their way to Toronto.

Annie and Jai are en route on the CIA private jet, they get a fax that Auggie was not  on the Montreal train.  It sparks a discussion between them as Annie has 100% trust in Auggie, while Jai is skeptical because he is not following CIA protocols.  Annie remembers that in Albany Amtrak splits it’s trains and figures out that they may be headed to Toronto, Jai is skeptical but he tells the pilot to change course.  As they arrive in Toronto and get on the train to see if Auggie is there they hear gun shots come from the back of the train.  Auggie and Natasha were still getting “re-acquainted” with each other when they get a knock on the door, Natasha opens the door before Auggie can advise her against it.

The two Russian mobsters bust in and a fight ensues, Auggie’s military training is allowing him to hold his own despite being blind.  He has Natasha hit the lights during the fight which causes a misfire by one of the mobsters who ends up shooting the window out.  Auggie ends up dispatching with both mobsters and tosses them out of the window, the FBI is closing in on the train as they figured it out as well.  Natasha asks Auggie if she did not have access to the code would he still help her, he says he would and she gives him the USB key containing the code.

They exchange a few I love you’s and Natasha jumps from the train leaving Auggie behind, you can tell they are still in love with each other.  He catches up with Annie and Jai just as the FBI shows up and asks where Natasha is, he says he doesn’t know and they walk off unsatisfied.  When Auggie gets back to the office Joan tells him to never pull a stunt like that again and he promises he won’t, as he is leaving Annie talks to him about the Liza Hearn situation.  He tells her that he is going to gain as much information from her as possible and hand the information over to his bosses, then he will break up with her.

Annie gives her sister a new camera because she felt sorry for making her take the pictures down, and they make up with each other by taking new pictures this time with the children instead of Annie in the photos.  Auggie arrives home clearly distraught and conflicted over the entire Natasha situation, as he walks into his apartment someone puts a hand on his shoulder.  The expression on his face was joy for a moment as he thought (hoped) it was Natasha, but it was only Liza Hearn he feigned a fake smile as that is clearly not the person he wanted to be there.
