Covert Affairs Recap 1.08 – What Is and What Should Never Be

We find Annie in a rainy warehouse type area, with a dead woman lying next to her.  The police arrest her with a gun in her hand, and she is taken into custody.  Arthur and Joan Campbell discuss the reasons Annie is in custody, and Arthur wants to know if Ben Mercer is involved.  Joan does not know and is more worried about getting Annie out of federal custody as it looks like she committed a murder.  Annie is locked in the interrogation room, and the agent that comes to interview Annie is the same one that arrested her back at the hotel.

Joan shows up posing as Annie’s lawyer, but the FBI agent isn’t buying it.  He allows her to meet with Annie, and Joan is there to find out what happened.  Annie is having trouble remembering, so they try to recall together what happened.  Annie attended an art show under her Smithsonian cover, and she is watching an auction on a particular piece.  As the bidding goes on it gets up to $3 million dollars, and an individual bids $10 million dollars for it which was a gross over bid for the item.

Annie attempts to find out who the person is, but the auction house does not give out personal information.  Annie tells Auggie about it and he tells her to enter the information in the computer and see what comes up.  Annie invites Jai Wilcox to dinner at her sister’s house, and her sister thinks that he is great for her.  Jai heads home and the situation is kind of awkward because it seems there might be some interest there, Jai tells Annie to take her time.

As Annie goes back to her room to sleep, Ben Mercer comes through her window; of course you know she is shocked.  Ben starts out trying to explain why he left, and then he tells her that he was the one who told her to watch a specific lot at the auction.  He tells her that leaving her was the hardest thing he ever did, but he needs her to trust him.  The auction was purchased by the right hand man of an arms dealer who uses the auctions to move his money and buy weapon schematics.  He tells her that Joan and Arthur Campbell are not to be trusted and they just want to control the weapons and not destroy them.  He also tells her to go talk to a lady named Sophie Jacklin at the auction house and ask her about two lots and specific dates, he adds that she should not believe anything that anyone at the CIA tells her about him.

Annie decides to trust him and attempts to search the CIA database for information on Ben Mercer or Sophie Jacklin, and she is stone walled by the data security.  She heads to the auction house and uses the information Ben gave her to get an audience with Sophie; unfortunately Sophie gets a bit suspicious and pulls a gun on Annie wondering who she is.  Annie tells her that she was sent by Ben Mercer to help her, and Sophie then puts the gun down and starts talking to Annie about what is going on.

Annie convinces her to go back to Langley and tell the CIA what she knows, but before they can leave the gun dealers men show up to get the painting and catch Annie and Sophie.   They run into the warehouse and the men give chase and killing the security guard.  After a game of cat and mouse one of the men is killed, and the other one knocks Annie out as they are struggling with each other.  He then focuses his gun on Sophie who has her gun pointed at him, they both end up shooting each other as the fire sprinklers go off in the warehouse (which is how the episode started).

Joan continues to interview Annie, and Annie is attempting to lie about parts of the story.  She omits any mention of Ben Mercer; Joan senses that she is lying as Annie starts to mess up details.  Auggie is trying to restore the search history from Annie’s computer while Jai Wilcox searches Annie’s house for clues.  Auggie asks Jai does he know anything about a Ben Mercer as he found that information in the search parameters he restored, Jai says no as he finds an album with pictures of Annie and Ben in it.  Jai calls Joan Campbell and lets her know, Joan presses Annie and tells her that she is considered a civilian and she will leave her there to face the charges unless she comes clean.  Annie tells her she saw Ben Mercer, but wonders if the agency recruited her because they thought she could bring him in.

Annie comes clean about everything she knows, but has a confrontation with Joan.  She puts her back in line and tells her that in the end either she does her job or not, and she assigns Annie to the FBI agent to try and find out who the shooter is at the Auction house.  Annie talks to Auggie and tells her that she got off fairly easy as she could have been brought up on treason charges, and that she can’t shoulder the blame for Sophie getting killed.

Annie heads back to the auction house with the FBI agent, and they find that the painting they were looking for is missing.  As they leave they find the security guard murdered as he saw someone leaving with the painting on a security camera, apparently the shooter came back for the item.  Annie gets back to Langley and tries to explain to Joan that they got there too late and asks her what she wants her to do, Joan tells her to go home and stay there the rest of the night.

When Annie gets home she remembered that Ben Merer placed a book of matches on her night stand with a location on the docks and the name of a boat.  Annie heads down there thinking that Ben Mercer will be there, but instead she runs into the gun runner Russ HIlger who tells his men to kill her.  They escort her to some place to dispense with her, and she starts a fight with the two men and a chase ensues.  Annie jumps over a series of boats and manages to get away from one of the men only to see a gun pointed in her face by the other.  Jai Wilcox and backup show up just in time to arrest Hilger and his men before they can kill Annie, Joan Campbell had her followed and she was thankful for it.

With the mission complete Annie seems to be worn out from her ordeal, seeing Ben Mercer stirred up a lot of mixed feelings.  Joan Campbell tells Arthur Campbell that Annie will not be used as bait anymore, but Arthur Campbell tells her that it is not her call.  He adds that as long as Annie works for the CIA she will be used in whatever way necessary, Joan does not seem please, but is powerless to do much about it.  It seems that Annie is conflicted about what to believe and exactly what to do in order to make sense of it all, this was an interesting twist on the storyline.  Everything is in the open now, but still mysteries remain about exactly why the CIA wants to catch Ben Mercer so badly.
