Covert Affairs Recap 1.09 – Fool In The Rain

An Iranian man escapes his handlers in a hotel, but it is unknown why at this point.  We then see Joan talking to Annie about a note Ben Mercer left for her years ago, and Joan suggests maybe Annie take some time off.  We then see the Iranian man asking a cab driver how close to America $63 will get him, and the cab driver tells him to just get in and they drive off.

Annie and her sister head off to Niagara Falls for a vacation, Annie’s brother in law had to cancel their 10^th anniversary because he got a new job and has to go on a trip with his new boss.  Auggie is talking to Liza Hearn as he continues to run his Op on her to find out who her source of information is, and she is trying to get more information out of him at the same time.

Joan and Arthur Campbell continue discussing their marriage and disagreeing over the way Annie is being used by the Agency, while they are in counseling they get a message that a member of the Iranian trade delegation wants to talk to the CIA and give them information.  He is in Niagara Falls so they choose to give Annie the assignment despite the fact that Joan objects to trying to get Annie to do it.  Auggie calls Annie and briefs her on what is going on while offering the assignment to her, Annie accepts the assignment and goes to pick up the member of the Iranian defector.

She makes up an excuse for her sister that she is going to work out, and goes to pick up the defector.  He gets in the vehicle with her and she tries to assess if he has legitimate information that is worth bringing him across the border, Mr. Yaya Rahimi is a little bit off and weird.  He gives Annie a bag full of documents to prove that he has information that is worth it, she calls back to the CIA and they ask her to fax the information as they try to verify his identity.  While Annie is on the phone with them her sister catches Yaya in their car, which forces Annie to make up an excuse as to why he is there.  Her sister ends up going sightseeing with Yaya while Annie goes to fax all of the information over a secure line to Langley.

Annie is having flash backs of Ben Mercer while she faxes all of the information to Langley, and her sister is spending time getting to know Yaya in the meantime.  Annie finishes faxing the information and meets back up with both of them, she gets a call from Langley and they tell her the information is decent as it shows signs they are smuggling commodities into Iran against the UN embargo.  Joan feels like Yaya would be a better asset if he were still in Iran feeding back better information, Annie objects and tells her he is not up to it because of his demeanor.  Joan says nothing was promised to him and he would be okay.

Annie breaks the news to Yaya and he says he cannot go back, and things do not work the same in Iran as they do in America.  He implies that he would be killed if he went back, and he jumps out of the car telling Annie he will find a way to America without her.  Joan calls Annie and tells her that she has done all she can do, and to start enjoying her vacation as she is going to get the Toronto branch of the CIA involved.  Annie meets up with her sister who tells her that she arranged for a meeting with Yaya and his ex-girlfriend from New Jersey, she told Annie the time and place when she would reach Niagara Falls.

Annie tells her sister she should not have done that and calls back to base, Jai Wilcox things something fishy is going on.  He asks her if she is sure this guy is not an intentional plant, and Annie tells him that would be a stretch with the way he acts.  Annie heads off to the meeting to find Yaya before he meets up with his ex-girlfriend.  Arthur Campbell calls Auggie into his office and shows him a picture of he and Liza Hearn together, Auggie reveals that he is running a covert operation on her.  Campbell tells Auggie he is aware of every covert operation in the agency and was unaware of this one, Auggie starts to give him all the information that he has gathered so far.  Campbell gives Auggie false information to provide to her that only 17 people in the world know is fake information, so if she comes back and knows the information is fake then they will know partially where the leak is coming from.  Auggie meets with Liza in the park and gives her the information; she asks why the sudden change of heart and he plays it off like she got to him.

Annie finds Yaya as he is talking to his ex-girlfriend; Joan Campbell tells Annie they found out that his ex-girlfriend was going to be unable to make it up there.  The Iranian delegation found out and sent two people after him, Joan tells Annie not to get involved and let the Canadian authorities handle the situation.  Annie agrees, but then she decides to follow them as they take Yaya away, and as they walk I the bowels of Niagara falls with the intention of assassinating Yaya Annie starts fighting with the woman.

After a long battle where Annie almost gets shot she knocks out the Iranian spy, but in the process Yaya and the other Iranian operative fall over into the falls.  Yaya catches hold of some service wires before he falls in, Annie manages to get a chain and pull him up from certain death.  Yaya is going to be resettled in America after all, and Yaya is finally grateful that his dream of getting to America is coming true.  Annie gets back to the room and her sister’s husband came up after all to surprise his wife, so Annie heads back home to give them some privacy.

Liza Hearn meets with Auggie and tells him the information he gave her was bogus, and she is upset with him for sending her on a wild goose chase.  She realizes that Auggie played her and she dumps him right on the spot, but not after confirming that one of the seventeen people on Arthur Campbell’s list is the leak.  Annie was still having flashbacks to her time with Ben Mercer in Sri Lanka, and remembers a man in a hat who was following them around talking to Ben.  She sees Jai Wilcox with the same color hat on and she realizes that he was in Sri Lanka arguing with Ben Mercer, she does not say anything and only looks at him in awe.  She goes back  home and burns the good by letter that Ben left her in Sri Lanka it seems she is ready to move on, but the question remains why was Jai Wilcox there?
